Welcome to Centre Marriage
Relational Therapy

Our passion is to bring forth wholeness and healing through marriage counseling, family counseling, and individual counseling, serving areas of State College and Bellefonte.

Whether you are struggling in your marriage, experiencing conflict in your family, or need help with personal issues, we are here to help. Centre Marriage & Relational Therapy believes that we are shaped powerfully by our relationships; those current and those in the past.Even when our struggles don’t appear to be relational in nature, often times they are rooted in some type of relational dynamic. This stems from what we believe is one of the core desires of humanity; to know and to be known in relationship.

We provide counseling for married and non-married couples, adolescents, families, and individuals who are struggling with a variety of concerns, from infidelity to communication issues. Our therapists assist clients in working through interpersonal and intrapersonal conflict resolution, placing the importance of holistic healthy relationships at the core of our work. If you are curious about how your current struggle in your marriage or family may be relational in nature, or how our approach could help, get in touch with us today.

Appointments can be made by calling our office at (814)-531-5659 or by requesting us to get in contact with you via our Contact Us page

What does a first session look like?

The first session is a chance for the client and therapist to get to know each other. There will be some paperwork for you to fill out at the beginning. Then they will ask some questions to get to know you and give you an opportunity to share some of your story. It is also a chance for you to get to know them, and you are welcome to ask any questions you would like. They will also begin to gather a history of the presenting concern as well as some relational history. By the end of the first session you and your therapist will begin to set clear goals for treatment and begin to lay out a plan for working together.

How much is a session?

Our rates have recently changed to reflect the growth within our practice.

Licensed Therapist – $100
Masters Level Therapist – $65
Intern Therapist – Sliding Fee Scale

Reduced fees for financial hardship may be available. We have established relationships with a number of churches in the area, if you are in need of financial assistance you may be able to contact your local church. We would be happy to network with your pastor and church.

How do you accept payments?

We accept cash, check and credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Discover) for your agreed upon session fee. Beyond our first session, for sessions after 4pm you must pay ahead of time to schedule the appointment. However, all other appointments can be paid at the time of your visit.

What is your cancellation policy?

We will be implementing a new policy that you will need to have a credit card on file in order to schedule your next appointment. This ensures the timely and proper payment of session fees and late fees. At the time of scheduling your next session, you are committing to paying for that session. If you are late, cancel, or don’t show up for your appointment, you will be billed according to the agreed upon schedule. The therapist has complete discretion on waiving that fee for sickness or other events. If you have a recurring appointment, then your next scheduled appointment will be considered your commitment to pay. Any appointments beyond that can be rescheduled without penalty. If you choose to not have a credit card on file, then you can give us a cash deposit equal to 100% of your session fee to be used to cover any additional fees and which will be returned to you at the end of treatment if no additional fees are incurred.

Do you take insurance?

Our licensed therapists are currently in-network with Highmark Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Capital Blue Cross, UPMC and Aetna.

If you are seeing our Masters Level therapists, there are a few factors to consider. First you should check your copay and deductible for your mental health coverage. Often times the copay is similar to our standard rates. In some occasions, insurance will not begin to cover any fees until your deductible is met.  You may also have the option to submit for reimbursement for an out-of-network provider. We would encourage you to contact your insurance provider to inquire.

An additional factor to consider is that any therapist can not bill your insurance unless there is a diagnosed disorder. The vast majority of insurances do not cover marriage therapy unless it is to treat an underlying, diagnosed disorder. Also keep in mind, once an insurance claim is submitted, that diagnosis becomes a part of your over all medical record.

About Us

About Us

At Centre Marriage and Relational Therapy, we understand the challenges that our clients face are complex and multifaceted, and so we attempt to gain a full understanding of the various systems that influence those challenges. Regardless of the model of treatment that our therapists utilize, we share a commitment to see our clients as more than a diagnosis; we are all on a unique journey searching for healing and wholeness.
As a group of providers, we share a common belief in our Christian faith, and while this is an important part of our identity, we recognize that it’s not shared by everyone. For those clients that desire faith to be a part of their work, we are happy to incorporate that, and those clients that do not will still receive the same professional quality of care and treatment.

Our Therapists

Shane Landherr, LMFT – Call for scheduling

I believe deeply in the importance of marriage and in its ability to unite and strengthen individuals into a sum that is greater than its parts. Using social research, and insight from the Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) field, I hope to expand the understanding and inherent value that marriage holds for us today.

I also work with couples and individuals on a variety of different struggles such as infertility,  sexual addictions and issues, and other relationship issues. I am able to bring a relational perspective into these personal issues that can help get to the deeper places that we get stuck and can create larger systemic changes within your life and relationships.

I received my BA in Christian Ministry from Messiah College and have over eight years of ministry experience working with adolescents and families in the local church. My formal therapy training is from Evangelical Theological Seminary where I received my MA of Marriage and Family Therapy (MAMFT). I am a member of the Christian Association for Psychological Studies(CAPS) as well as a clinical fellow of the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT). I am currently licensed in the state of Pennsylvania as an LMFT.

Kelly Chismar, LPC – Schedule a new appointment

IMG_6462Thank you for taking the time to read about us! I would like to share a little about myself. But first, as you consider choosing someone to help you or the person you care about, I would like to encourage you to remember that it takes courage to walk through difficult times and I believe it is an honor to come along side of you in the process. I care deeply about my faith, family, and friends and desire to help people, especially children, work through difficult times and hurts by walking along side of them during their journey.

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in the state of PA, a Nationally Certified Counselor and a Board Certified School Counselor with a master’s degree in Counselor Education from Penn State University. Since 2009, I have gained experience working in residential treatment, outpatient care, school counseling, and now in private practice. I am very passionate about working with children and helping each individual and their families through the healing process. I believe in using a holistic approach and place great value on the relationship between therapist and individual, as well as family members as a way for true healing to take place.

The use of play techniques is also an extremely valued asset for me in my role working with children and adolescents. The therapeutic powers of play have made, and continue to make a tremendous difference for every individual I’ve encountered! I would be happy to share more about this and answer any other questions you may have. I hope you found this helpful and I look forward to hearing from you!

Steve Gibboney, CounselorSchedule a new appointment

I received my BA in Biblical Studies from Cairn University in 2006. I spent nine years working with adolescents and their families, five of which were spent in an international community working with Third Culture Kids/Global Nomads. I obtained my MA in Professional counseling from Liberty University, and am currently working toward licensure and National board certification. I am a member of the American Association of Christian Counselors.

My therapeutic approach is strengths based and collaborative. I believe that relating with honesty, courage, and compassion to others, the world around us, and perhaps most foundationally, to ourselves, lies at the heart of living a full and healthy life. I also believe that each person has the means within themselves to address the challenges that they are facing. My role is to help identify those internal resources, and offer guidance in utilizing them. I have experience working with couples, as well as individuals facing a number of challenges such as anxiety, depression, adjustment issues, and relational issues.

Laura Dionne, LSW – Schedule a new appointment

In my work as a therapist I place a strong emphasis on creating a processional working relationship built on trust and feelings of safety. It is essential that you feel safe when working with me in order to heal. My goal is to help you learn more about your strengths, your values, and your dreams for your future. I want to help you feel more in control of your mental health so that your quality of life can be improved. You deserve to feel better and to live the life that you desire.

I received my Master’s in Social Work at Michigan State University and completed an Evidenced Based Trauma Treatment certificate program while obtaining this degree. I was trained in Trauma Focused-Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) and was able to administer TF-CBT to adolescents in the local school system. Through this experience I developed a strong passion in working with youth who have a history of trauma and painful life events. This also provided me with the insight that early intervention is key in preventing further mental health issues as well as trauma exposure.

After I graduated I gained experience working as a case manager at a local community mental health agency and then later I gained experience as an outpatient therapist where I worked with people of all ages and presenting issues. Through these experiences I found that trauma is a theme in the vast majority of individuals lives.

I am enhancing my professional skills by completing Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) training which is a type of trauma-informed therapy that has years of evidenced-based research that proves it is one of the most effective therapies for those experiencing trauma-related symptoms. I would also like to note that I am especially interested in working with LGBTQ members and am open to working with those who are above the age of 10. Other areas of interest include working with depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, grief/loss, self-esteem issues, and self-harm

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and I hope that you reach out to schedule a session with me to see if we are a good fit.

Counseling Services

Our Counseling Services

We specialize in client concerns such as depression, anxiety, angerinfidelity, sexual addiction, sexual intimacy problems, parenting, body image & self-esteem, self harm, divorce & separation, bereavementcommunication issues, and conflict resolution

Collaborative Treatment

At Centre Marriage and Relational Therapy, our therapists specialize in complementary areas of care. This allows us to collaborate in treating clients by focusing uniquely on multiple aspects of the larger family unit. On occasion, situations arise in which it is necessary to provide care to a variety of different members within a family. Take for instance a family experiencing marital distress which has had a negative effect upon the children, we can provide marital therapy to the couple while also providing play therapy techniques to the children to help them cope and understand their experiences. This can lead the whole family to a healthier place they may not otherwise have arrived.

Marriage Counseling

We believe that the ultimate goal of marriage, its highest achievement, is to become best friends throughout a lifetime spent together. That is achieved through a lifetime of exploring one another, discovering the very best within one another and offering yourself up as the very best to your partner. While this is the ultimate goal, we often encounter difficulties and trials along the way that can threaten to derail us. It is during these moments and encounters that we can help. If you are struggling with any of the areas listed above, Centre Marriage & Relational Therapy can offer you help to get back on track to achieving the marriage you first believed you could have.

Premarital Preparation

Did you know… that premarital preparation can reduce the divorce rate by 30%…can increase marital happiness…and can help you make the most of your first years in marriage!

One of the best plans you can make for your upcoming wedding is to prepare for your marriage as well! While the big day approaches and the excitement builds, you can be preparing for what comes after the vows, cake and dancing. Studies have shown that participating in premarital preparation can greatly increase the chances that you will have a happy and lasting marriage. Using the PREPARE/ENRICH inventory as well as the MBTI and Love Languages, we can tailor a unique package to your relationship to give you the tools to make the most of your upcoming marriage.

Family Counseling

Over many years of working with adolescents and their families, we have learned that families can be delicate at times, but that they hold incredible inherent potential for healing and wellness. Our approach to families is unique from traditional psychology; instead of separating the members of the family that may need help, we meet with the family as a whole unit. It is within this whole unit that you must live your lives. We do not believe that families are broken or dysfunctional as much as you may not have all of the tools that are needed, and you may need help accessing the resources within your family.

Adolescent Counseling

Today’s teenagers face many unique difficulties that were non-existent just 10 years ago. They must learn to cope with a systemic abandonment and the effects of pseudo-electronic intimacy resulting in increased social isolation. This results in many teenagers not having the emotional resources to cope well with the added pressure. Some turn to alcohol, drugs or sexual intimacy as a way to numb the pain or fill the gap; others may take more extreme measures of self-harm to cope with the emotional pain. With 10 years of training and experience working with adolescents, we feel that we are uniquely qualified to meet adolescents where they are in their experience and to offer them guidance and help to navigate through their pain.

We offer support and help to the family of individuals struggling with self-harm and other painful issues. Having closely experienced the failing of many inpatient facilities to care for the wounds of the family and parents, we would be honored to offer you that support and help in traveling alongside your adolescent through this difficult time.

Child Counseling

Expanded areas of treatment include childhood behavioral issues; family transition from divorce or separation; grief and loss; poor self esteem and body image; and parenting support.

Individual Counseling

Many adults struggle with various issues throughout their lifetime. It is natural and normal to experience periods of sadness, times of joy, and moments of oscillating between. At times these experiences may become problematic and we may even become stuck in a pattern that is difficult to end.

We can help with many common issues, coming from a unique relational perspective in all of our work. Even if you are the only client physically in the therapy room, we consider the influence and involvement of your greater relational system. Standing on the research and influence of the MFT field, we believe strongly that your best path to wholeness and wellness includes your greater family and social system.
